Cat. #0005042: CLEM BEVANS

Exceedingly rare vintage inscribed blue ballpoint pen signature, dated 1961, on the verso of a roughly 4x5-inch black and white publicity portrait. In fine condition, with gentle edge wear. GREAT character actor Clem Bevans is remembered for playing a vast array of eccentric, grumpy, old coots. He began in Vaudeville in 1900, in an act with Grace Emmett, after which he progressed to burlesque, Broadway and even light opera. He made his movie debut at the age of 55 in Way Down East (1935), as an affable codger, after which he was typecast for the remainder of his career. Among his many wonderful credits are The Phantom Rider (1936), Come and Get It (1936), Topper (1937), The Toast of New York (1937), Of Human Hearts (1938), Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940), Young Tom Edison (1940), Sergeant York (1941), The Smiling Ghost (1941), Saboteur (1942), This Hun for Hire (1942), The Human Comedy (1943), The Yearling (1946), Mourning Becomes Electra (1947), Portrait of Jennie (1948), Streets of Laredo (1949), Tell It to the Judge (1949), Harvey (1950), and Hangman's Knot (1952). In 1962, he played the role of Pete in the classic "Twilight Zone" episode "Hocus-Pocus and Frisby."
